Weekend itinerary

A weekend on Jocassee's clear mountain water

Lake Jocassee opens to the public only through Devils Fork, so give the water your first calm morning and let everything else fall in around it.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

A park overnight keeps the ramp, shoreline, and short Oconee Bell loop close; waterfall coves require suitable boat access or a tour.

Best length

2 nights

Two nights provide one complete Lake Jocassee day, an evening at the campsite or villa, and a short park walk before departure.

Stay

Devils Fork State Park Villas

The park's 20 lakeside villas keep the ramp, shoreline, and Oconee Bell Nature Trail close. Check the official calendar because two-night and seasonal week-long minimums can apply.

Main activity

Lake Jocassee from Devils Fork

Check the park capacity advisory and Duke water-access alerts before committing a boat trailer, rental, or tour to the morning.

Pace

Park Friday, lake Saturday, Oconee Bell Sunday

Check capacity before departure, reserve the boat or rental, and bring breakfast and lunch into the park.

A villa or campsite inside Devils Fork keeps the final park approach out of Saturday morning.
A kayak launching from a clear rocky Lake Jocassee shoreline
Paddlers should choose a conservative route near Devils Fork and turn back before wind or boat traffic builds.
Spring wildflowers beside a forest creek near Lake Jocassee
Oconee Bell Nature Trail is the named short park walk for Sunday morning.

Friday

Check into the park and keep dinner beside the campsite or villa.

Arrive before the rural approach gets dark, confirm the current advisory, unload the cooler, and eat the meal already packed for the park.

Saturday

Give the full daylight block to Lake Jocassee.

Read the park advisory and Duke access alert, then use the reserved boat, tour, kayak, or paddleboard plan before afternoon wind or storms build.

4:00 PM

Afternoon

Leave the water with time to unload and dry gear.

Return rental equipment, clear the dock within posted limits, trailer the boat if needed, and change before the campground or villa evening.

Sunday

Walk Oconee Bell Nature Trail, then leave through SC-11.

Pack the overnight first, check out on time, and use only the short named park loop before the road home.

9:00 AM

Sunday morning

Choose breakfast, coffee, or a short walk.

Finish breakfast at the campsite or villa, pack the car, and confirm checkout before starting the trail.
